The very first thing a plumber will do is gather the tools need to fix your problem. Here is a list of tools he will be using:

After gathering the tools needed the plumber will follow the steps need to perform the task at hand. Here are the steps that will need to be followed.
Step 1: You will need to find source of the water and cut the water supply to the faucet. In most cases, you will find a shut off valve located under the faucet that needs repairing. In any case, be sure the water supply is shut off.
Step 2: Remove the handles that are on the faucet valves. This can usually be done by removing the screw at the top of the handle and pry the handle up with the flat headed screwdriver. If the handle seemed to be secure you can add a small amount of penetrating oil to help loosen the handles.
Step 3: Use the wrench to loosen the packing nut. After that you should notice the valve stem. The stem will need to be removed. Depending on the faucet the stem will need to be twisted out or popped out. Be sure to check the stem for any damage.
Step 4: Inspect the washer that is found on the end of the valve stem or in the faucet seat where the valve stem is located. In most cases, you will find the washer or O-ring torn, cracked or deteriated. I any case the washer or O-ring will need to be replaced.
Step 5: Carefully reassemble the faucet making sure that you have all the washers and rings in the proper place. Slowly turn the water supply back on and inspect for any leaks.
